My Genre

While I'll never say I "only" write YA, that's usually what ends up coming out. I enjoy reading most anything (except horror/thriller; I don't do scary) but I usually end up reading a lot of YA - especially YA with a supernatural/paranormal twist to it. I find that genre open to a lot more possibilities. At least for me.

When I write, I usually get an idea and then just write as the idea grows and forms into some kind of story. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes it's really bad. But in almost every case, my idea involves teenaged characters. Some have had a fantasy/supernatural element, some have been contemporary. So, I just write what sounds interesting to me, and right now it's YA with a supernatural element. With that age group, I find the story more...involving because everything is heightened when you're younger. Everything feels so urgent and dramatic and consuming that you can't help but be swept up in the story and the emotions of the characters. That's what I'm hoping to achieve anyway. The supernatural element adds an extra degree of intrigue, and that mystery - for me - is what keeps the pages turning. I have to find out what the big secret is and what it means for the characters. I love it. Hopefully when I finish, others will love it too. But for right now, it's enough that I love it. It's what keeps me writing.
